Ingredients
  

Meatballs

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs Fresh or panko
  • 1/4 cup milk Whole or 2%
  • 1 small onion Finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp butter For sautéing
  • 1/2 lb ground beef 80% lean recommended
  • 1 egg Lightly beaten
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg Freshly grated
  • 1/2 tsp allspice Ground
  • 1 tsp salt Adjust to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper Freshly ground
  • 2 tbsp butter For frying

Creamy Sauce

  • 2 tbsp butter For sauce base
  • 2 tbsp flour All-purpose
  • 2 cups beef broth Low sodium preferred
  • 1 cup heavy cream Can substitute with half-and-half
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce For depth of flavor

Instructions
 

  • Soak breadcrumbs in milk for 5 minutes.
  • Sauté chopped onion in butter until soft, then cool.
  • In a bowl, mix ground beef, pork, egg, soaked breadcrumbs, sautéed onions, nutmeg, allspice, salt, and pepper.
  • Shape into small meatballs, about 1-inch in diameter.
  • Fry meatballs in butter until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  • To make sauce, melt butter in the skillet, whisk in flour, and cook for 1 minute.
  • Gradually whisk in beef broth and heavy cream. Simmer until thickened.
  • Stir in soy sauce, then return meatballs to the pan to coat with sauce.
  • Serve warm with mashed potatoes.

Notes

For a healthier version, use lean meats and substitute heavy cream with Greek yogurt.
